week fourteen

I cannot believe we are entering week fifteen already. Time is flying by too fast and I currently feel that I am always three steps behind. P was on a business trip all week and I thought I would have a lot of time catching up on everything but I have to admit I didn't get much done all week besides working on my latest Saarinen chair like a maniac. Wednesday night I scraped off all the remaining foam bits and pieces from the seat and the backrest so I could glue on the new foam in my upholstery class on Thursday. Since there is only one class left to finish the chair I needed to get busy cutting and sewing the fabric for the new chair cover. It took me almost five hours Friday night to cut everything because I had barely enough fabric and laying the old fabric out onto the new in the best way possible took forever. It might not have helped that I watched a movie while doing this. On Saturday the mother of a friend helped me sew, actually this time she sewed everything for me as I couldn't get the whole piping thing to work. I could have never done it by myself and am so grateful for her help. Next thing on my list is definitely a sewing class, there are another 4-5 chairs that need upholstery work in our basement and I want to be able to do all the work by myself. Because Friday and Saturday were pretty busy I needed a lazy Sunday, first I slept in until 10am, which rarely happens and from there I only changed into my sweatpants and spent most of the day on the couch reading or watching tv. Although the weather looked pretty nice yesterday I didn't even set a foot out of the door all day. Oh, well once in a while we all deserve a day like that! Hopefully your weekend was equally relaxing! After the day on the sofa I am ready to tackle week fifteen, let's see what it will bring...

  1. I hate it when there is so little fabric that the cutting needs to be planned to the detail, because I usually mess it up anyhow. I had that problem with my spring jacket too.
Well, but sounds like you got a lot done regarding the chair, and good for you to have helping hands.

    1. I thought I had planned correctly but when I laid out the piping at a bias I realized I am short on fabric. Luckily I was able to make it work because I had ordered the fabric on ebay and it was a remnant, so I couldn't just go to the store and buy more. Next time I know to plan better ;)

  2. Piping. {shudder} I'm so glad you got help with that! And honestly? Your Sunday sounds perfect to me! When I've had days like that and the weather is stunning, I'll feel that niggle of guilt too, but you know what? I think your body was telling you that it (and your spirit) needed the rest. You were smart to pay attention.

    Happy new week, dear. XO

    1. The piping part really scared me and at first I didn't want to do any piping on the chair but I am glad I did because the chair is supposed to have it and it looks great. Honestly I could use another (or more) days on the couch but I always feel so guilty not getting anything done...Have a great week too! xx

  3. Piping? Now that’s a scary thought, I attempted it once and NEVER again. I can’t wait to see this new chair in all its piped glory! Also have to mention how much I love your lazing-about get-up, those bottoms are awesome!

    1. I love my striped pants too. Bought them recently at Uniqlo, I believe you have that store in London as well. My next upholstery class is not until the 18th but after that I hopefully can present the chair in its piped glory ;)

  4. Sometimes you just need to laze around and do nothing without feeling even slightly guilty about it!! That's my motto, anyway :) You had a productive week even if it didn't feel like it! How many people do all that on top of a full time job? Give yourself some credit! Can't wait to see the finished chair this time around!

    1. Erin that's so true, I need to give myself credit for what I accomplished on Friday/Saturday and totally deserved to veg out on the couch on Sunday. I should do that more often :)

  5. Good for you, everyone needs a relaxing day week! What are you doing with all the chairs? Will you sell them on etsy?

    1. The goal is to get an Etsy store up and running but I still haven't looked into it. Maybe I can also sell on flea markets etc...

  6. oooh piping on the chair, that will look lovely! if you buy piping it isn't quite as challenging but making your own . . .ugh that is something i have decided i can live without doing. tedious is the word that comes to mind. can't wait to see the finished product! my weekend was busy but it was actually relaxing to finally check some things off my list that have been haunting me for months (years, a few of them!).

    1. If I should ever need piping again I go the buying premade piping route and choose something that will contrast the chair or pillow or whatever I am sewing. Good for you for finally checking off things from your list. Whenever I get to do that I am so happy and wonder why it took me so long (months/years) to accomplish it in the first place ;)

  7. Hehe "Flowers Are Smelly, and So Are You"- really makes me chuckle.
So glad for you that you took a day on Sunday. And trust me, you didn't miss much in terms of weather (it was windy and chilly). Have a happy Week 15!

    1. The poster made me laugh as well. A woman saw me taking the photo and told me that the owners of the house change them about once a month. I have to look out for the next one...Have a happy week too!

  8. Yes, everyone deserves a day like that. I Know what you mean about feeling guilty about taking a day to rest. There is always so much to do, how could we possibly just sit and relax? Though, as Lauren points out, our body is probably trying to send us a message and it's best that we listen. Good for you, Nina!
You know, once you have that sewing class under your belt, you'll be ready to offer your own upholstery workshops. ;)
