Yesterday my upholstery course started again and I almost finished the chartreuse Saarinen chair so I have to bring a new project to class with me next Thursday. Here is a round of the chairs that are sitting in our basement and are waiting for a makeover. I think I can handle the orange chair by myself, as I would only have to wrap the fabric around the seat and back cushion, staple it in place and call it a day. Of the first chair I have three and thought I could upholster two in black leather and one with a colorful print. Marimekko , maybe? For the second chair I am not sure what fabric to pick. I still have enough of the chartreuse bouclé fabric to use on this chair. Chair number three also could possibly be a project I could tackle on my own. Argh, I am so indecisive but I think I have narrowed the choices down to the first two chairs. What do you think? Who's next in line for getting a makeover?
Are you having Monday (President's Day) off like me? What are your plans for the (long) weekend? I am planning to work on some house projects and also use a day to hang out on the couch to enjoy that we got free HBO for a couple of months. I hope you will enjoy your weekend too!
Girl, you are like the chair whisperer! I love all these chairs you're finding. And the ideas for that first one, two in black and one in a print? Brilliant!
ReplyDeleteNeel has a chair in his lab that reminds me a little of a mix between the green and the orange. I. Want. It. It's totally beat up, but a funky retro office chair that would be PERFECT at my desk. He won't give it to me. I've even offered my perfectly acceptable (cough-boring-cough) desk chair in its place. But no go. The man has no imagination! ;)
Enjoy your weekend! I plan on doing much the same!
Ha, ha maybe I should get business cards with chair whisperer printed on them ;) You should really sweet talk Neel in giving you the chair. It sounds like a great chair.
DeleteThese look amazing! I'm coming over to learn from you! Looking forward to seeing what's next. Please do a vine about it!
ReplyDeleteThanks Tina! I will definitely post a step by step of recovering the chair this time. I still haven't downloaded vine but will look into it...
DeleteI would most likely choose the green one with wheels because it looks most difficult. Love the drawers behind the beige chair!
ReplyDeleteYou guys convinced me and I will be working on the green chair next. Those wood drawers are amazing, they are standing in the office I work. I wouldn't mind owning them myself.
DeleteHahaha, I love that Lauren called you the chair whisperer, because it's so fitting. You have a special gift when it comes to rescuing needy furniture and then rehabbing them and making them beautiful again. Seriously, you could teach a class! I would pick chair #1 or #2 if it were up to me, as they look the most complicated. I have off Monday and I took off today so I'm looking at a really long weekend full of nothing! I have brunch with some friends tomorrow but that's about it. Enjoy your weekend! xox
ReplyDeleteChair #2 will be next. All your comments persuaded me to work on it now. Only have to find a nice fabric for it...
Deletei have to admit that i like the orange chair as is. it is such a great chair! so for your next subject i would totally go with chair number 2 because i would want to use that one asap. it's gorgeous and it looks like it would be difficult to get the seams lined up and the fabric pulled tight. and i love those draft cabinets (is that what they are?) behind chair #3. i need some of your thrifting mojo or maybe you need your own reality show. you have some mad skillz for finding the best stuff!
ReplyDeleteI love the orange chair as well. Unfortunately the back cushion has a tear in the fabric. If I redo the chair it will probably be in orange vinyl again to keep the look. And you guessed right, the cabinets behind chair #3 are drawing cabinet. They stand in the office I work at. Ha, ha I would not be good on TV I think because I am not even good at having my pictures taken ;)
DeleteHow do you get free HBO? I am interested to learn more ;-) I love all these chairs, will you keep them or sell them? I like the first and 3rd one best.
ReplyDeleteThe cable company gave it to us because we are good customers. Of course they want us to get hooked and then sign up to keep it. Honestly I'll just enjoy it while it lasts ;)
DeleteOh, my eye is gravitating towards the green one (top, right). I would love to see how it turns out. I have two vintage dining chairs (with arms) that desperately need to be reupholstered (have I already mentioned this to you?), and your upholstery posts are motivating me. I would actually like to make some black linen slip covers for them. I wish you lived closer, then you could come over and help. ;) Well, have a wonderful weekend, Nina!
ReplyDeletePS~Happy to read that you got a little snowboarding in and your barn door came out SO good!
The green chair is next! I think you mentioned reupholstering your dining room chairs before. If I lived closer we could have a day of upholstery fun together. I have to admit I am pretty smitten with our barn door too.
DeleteI too would go for the green. I think that, by now, you can handle the two on the bottom on your own. And, like Christine, I kind of like the orange as is. All great chairs though. Enjoy your long weekend!
ReplyDeleteGreen chair will be next so look out for a step by step on how I will transform it on the blog.
DeleteVery interesting chairs. And very cool about the upholstery class. That would be interesting class to take for me as well. I love the 3rd chair next to the orange and I love the storage cabinet you have behind it too. Good luck with all of them.
ReplyDeleteAnd enjoy the long weekend. it is the last one until May!
I can highly recommend taking an upholstery class, it is so much fun! The storage cabinet sits in my office but I would love to own it as well.
DeleteNina, I would love to see how many rescue chairs you have in your basement! I would hands-down go for the green chair, it just has oodles of potential and I would love to see what you do with it!
ReplyDeleteThere are only two more chairs sitting in the basement besides the one shown, which makes a grand total of 8 chairs :) And because you guys convinced me I am going to work on the green chair next.
DeleteNina, if I lived close to you, I would definitely buy some of the finished chairs off of you - you DIY goddess, you
ReplyDeleteAww thanks! You'd be my first customer. I am actually thinking about starting an etsy shop with my chairs and estate sale finds because I just can't keep them all.
DeleteOh, a Marimekko fabric would be spetcaular! I love all their fabrics (much more BOLD than I am with my black attire) :)
ReplyDeleteI love their fabrics as well! Sometimes I go to the Marimekko store close to browse in my lunch break...
DeleteHave you ever thought of selling them? I think you could make a business of that. :)
ReplyDeleteActually I am thinking about starting an etsy shop with the chairs because I can't keep them all.
