week four

This past week went by so fast. On Tuesday I went to another hockey game courtesy of one of P's suppliers. We had great seats and even got food and soft drinks for free. Yay! Thursday I've been to an event at the Bisazza Showroom where Chris Sharples, one of the founding principals of  SHoP Architects, was presenting some of his work. After the event I tried on something at the new C-Wonder store in Soho where they had a selection of different music and lighting themes to choose from in each fitting room. It actually scared the s**t out of me when the music started playing when I entered the fitting room because I didn't expect it.

Let's see what week five will have in store for me...

grandma's sewing box

This sewing box from the 50ies or 60ies used to be my grandmother's. She didn't need it anymore and gave it to me because I had been admiring it for a looong time. It is like a treasure trove, some of the things inside must be around 50 years old...I don't think I'll ever need to buy yarn, buttons or sewing needles ever again in my life. Now I just need to start to learn how to sew ;)

I brought the box over as my carry on luggage on the last flight back from Germany. Luckily the legs can be detached. Of course I emptied out any sharp object, which I put in the checked bag...

Do you have any treasures you inherited from family members?

my hang-it-all

Remember back in November I wrote about the vitra special edition of the Eames hang-it-all coat rack. My parents read my blog and thought the red one would be a great addition to our entry vestibule so they gave it to me for Christmas. Thanks again Mom and Dad!

I hung it on Sunday and even managed to hit studs with all four screws so it hangs very secure. Which was a first for me, I usually miss the studs by a couple of millimeters. Keep staring at it in awe because the red color looks so nice on the dark grey walls.

week three

The past week was pretty quiet besides our heating problem mentioned in my week two post. On Saturday I finally got my wish and we had our first snow of the season. Unfortunately it is raining today and all the snow is already gone...

spiegel kantine - spiegel cafeteria

Growing up in Hamburg (Germany) I passed by the Spiegel Haus (Spiegel is a weekly German newsmagazine) quite often and would always peek into the cafeteria on the ground floor. Already as a kid I loved the crazy colors and when I was older I found out it was designed by Verner Panton in 1969. The Spiegel offices moved last year in September to a new location in the nearby HafenCity and part of the old cafeteria moved into the new spaces as well. In 1998 the cafeteria was landmarked and on the occasion of the move given to the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg where the orange dining room will become part of the exhibition at the museum beginning summer of 2012. I will definitely check it out the next time I'm in Hamburg...

week two

Sorry I didn't post this on Monday but after a short weekend trip to Germany I came back on Sunday with a bad cold. Not that this would be enough a broken boiler was waiting for us at home. Bummer! Dragged myself to work just to be able to stay in a warm place ;) I felt and looked like a zombie all week and couldn't even get myself to post a prepared post. But I am happy to report that the heat is back on and I'm starting to feel better.

On my whirlwind trip to Germany I spent 2 days in Hanover but only ventured into the city once. I actually went to college in Hanover so I knew much of the sights but it was nice to be back. Since it was raining the whole time I went from one coffee shop to the next for a cup of tea. On Saturday we drove up to Hamburg (my hometown) because that's were we had to catch our plane on Sunday morning. We stayed at a hotel near the airport but also took a trip into the city to see the harbor. So much stress but also so much fun!

let it snow!

Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!

I'm still waiting for the first flurries to fall here in New Jersey and to make the wait a little easier I browsed the internet for some snowflake pick me ups. Can't wait for some flurries to melt on my face or maybe drink a cup of cocoa topped off with a marshmallow snowflake instead...
