week thirty

The past workweek was pretty uneventful, except for Tuesday were I needed to get some forms for the office signed by a city agency. When I got there first thing in the morning I was second in line and hoped to be in an out. When it was my turn the lady at the counter told me I needed to get another signature before she would sign and seal it and I would have to get it from an agency in the Bronx. So I hopped on the subway and trekked from the southern tip of Manhattan to the Bronx. I had to get off right at Yankee Stadium, an area I have never been before, so it was a little bit like sightseeing. In the end I got all my paperwork in order and made it to the office at around 2pm. My weekend was a slow and relaxing one, on Saturday we met friends for lunch at a new Mexican restaurant and the rest of the weekend was spent in a mixture of being lazy and working on the door. I stripped both sides of the door for a second time and one side now is mostly raw wood but the other side still has layers of paint on it. The layers of old paint look actually pretty good and I am thinking we might leave it like that and honestly I don't feel like stripping that door any more. So far I am pretty happy with the outcome of the door project but next step would be sanding the side that I stripped down to raw wood. Not my favorite part of the project because of the inset panels. Hope to be able to work on it some more next weekend. I want to be finished with this project when my parents visit in September and I have another project on my list that I want to finish by then. Sometimes I need the pressure to get things crossed of my list, especially when they are not really fun projects. What were you guys up to last week?

Have a great week 31!

    1. It's freaking me out too. I can't believe that time is flying by so fast, I have the feeling the older I get the faster time is ticking...

  2. Sounds pretty bureaucratic! Well good you got the paperwork done anyway.
Way to go with the door, I hope you show it to us once it's finished.

    1. Yes, bureaucratic is the right word. At least I got to do some sightseeing while securing all the necessary signatures. Of course I will show the finished door, hopefully soon.

  3. How come everything involving city bureaucracy involves a million different signatures from a million different offices, none of which talk to each other? At least you got it done! That middle top shot of the towers in the fog...incredible. I hope you do some sort of giant year-end collage of ALL your weekly instagrams. That would be awesome! xo

    1. Oh, having a end of the year collage sounds like a great idea. Running from one office to the next was pretty frustrating but at least I could catch up on my reading on the subway, it's a pretty long ride from southern Manhattan to the Bronx...

  4. there were times when i worked outside of the house that i love being sent on a goose chase errand. that door! geez, how many layers of paint are on it? if that photo is what it looks like now, i second your idea to leave it as it is. it looks like a beautiful old-world relic. it has such a pretty patina look to it - which apparently is a whole lot of work to get that look!

    1. I really didn't mind running around the city but it's so frustrating when you think you can get something done in a short amount of time and in the end it takes you 5 hours ;) If the door is as old as our house, it was built in 1870, there we almost as many coats of paints as it is old. I believe there were about 5-7 layers of paint on it.

  5. That's the kind of morning that would have put me in a very foul mood - good for you for rising above it and seeing the opportunity to sight-see. The door is looking really pretty - I think you should leave it as is!

    1. I always try to see the positive in everything, there is already so much negativity floating around ;) The more I look at the door the more the current look is growing on me. I will reevaluate next weekend and see what step I will have to take next...

  6. Ugh I hate having do to do government paperwork because its the worst to wait in line but at least you didn't have to wait long.

I always love an old door and old stuff- I love giving things a bit of a makeover but I sometimes think it's magically to show the layers of where something come from- does that make sense? like the door seeing all the beautiful layers.

    1. What you are saying makes total sense! It's a great way to show the age of the house and especially the door, as well as the stages the door went through already.

  7. Nina! How did I miss this post? :( Don't strip the door! And I'm not saying that just because well, stripping paint = ugh. I think it looks rustic and gorgeous. Aside from your bureaucratic false start, your weekend sounds much lovelier than mine. Nicely done!

    1. Lauren I think we are leaving the door as is, at least the side with the different layers of paint. It's a great way to show the doors age and all the stages it went through. I am just not sure how I will treat the new wood molding I will have to add after inserting the new glass but I am sure I will find a solution.
