The month is coming to an end and this can only mean it is time for another mini makeover post. You might have already seen some bits and pieces of today's makeover on Instagram. Painting this campaign dresser I got for next to nothing took only about two years from purchase to finish. The dresser had been sitting in our basement untouched because I couldn't make up my mind about what I wanted to do with it. Unfortunately the finish of the dresser was plastic laminate, it didn't look so hot with lots of dings and scratches but I still liked the overall look, especially the hardware. When P told me he needed more storage in his office as well as a place to put his record player I knew I had to paint the dresser the same color as his desk. First problem solved! Next problem was that one of the pulls was missing and I had a hard time finding one that matched the original pulls closely. When I finally found one in the depths of the internet that matched close enough I ordered two. Because the replacement pulls had a different finish than the original pulls I spray painted everything black. The pulls on the middle drawers are the replacements, they are a little bit bigger but you can hardly tell now that they are uniformed by color.
I have to admit I am really enjoying this column, hope you are as well! It keeps me motivated to start and finish long dreamed up projects. In fact I already have the next projects in mind, actually started working on two of them. What I really need is warmer weather so I can do a furniture sanding session outside and don't have to work inside a dusty basement...
Happy hump day my friends!
Wow I really like this, especially the corner "stiffeners" on each intersection. Amazing style. Glad you got it finished even if did take you two years.
ReplyDeleteI really like the corner pieces as well, they were what made me buy the dresser in the first place.
Deleteit looks so fantastic! i mean, really, really amazing. for one i can't tell that the pulls are different at all. for two i love the color. for three i Iooove the corner and center hardwares, especially for an office space - was it like that? or did you add it? for four i can not believe it stated out looking the way it did and you transformed it something so contemporary and new looking! so impressed. i love this column too : )
ReplyDeleteThank you Christine! I am blushing...The corner and center pieces of hardware came with the dresser, the hardware was what made me buy the dresser. I just realized I didn't include a proper before shot, I know I took one but that was almost two years ago and I have no clue where I saved it.
DeleteIt looks incredible!! And are you kidding, how could we not be loving this column? In addition to keeping you on track with your DIY projects, it's filling me with tons of inspiration too (and envy)!! I cannot even tell the pulls are different, you did a great job at matching them. The internet is wild, isn't it? How has the paint job held up with daily use? I'm always wary about painting over laminate, but maybe I've just been approaching it wrong? xo
ReplyDeleteI love the internet, nothing more fun than hunting down something you want/need or just stumbling across something you like. You have some mad hunting skills as well. The medicine cabinet you found is amazing. I have to say the paint is holding up pretty well. P's desk still looks great and it gets tons of use. I used special countertop paint, that was recommended for plastic laminates. It is pretty sticky and smelly stuff but it works like a charm.
DeleteGood job! :) And two years are nothing for great pieces to became true!
ReplyDeleteThank you Ana! The funny thing is when I finished the dresser I was wondering what took me so long to start painting it ;)
DeleteYour mini makeovers always look pretty maxi to me... I was waiting for the result after seeing your bits and pieces before on instagram, it looks great! I have a couple of mini-maxi makeover projects waiting to be done, your column is the perfect motivation!
ReplyDeleteYour new column Do it is pretty inspiring and motivating too! It's like the Nike slogan just do it ;) I have so many more mini and some maxi makeovers on my list and have to keep telling myself to do it!
DeleteNina, it looks great! You can't tell at all that the middle pulls don't match, and I love the industrial look of the cabinet. I love this column too. Keep going! You're so inspiring. I keep thinking of all sorts of ideas for Neel to do! ;)
ReplyDeleteIt looks REALLY good Nina and I really like the hardware as well
ReplyDeleteYou are right, the pulls are not an issue at all since you painted them all black. Nina if I ever find that dresser on my list, I hope you'll help me with the "restoration"! lol
ReplyDeleteIt came out so good! You can't tell the replacement hardware from the original at all. So great job on the internet hunt/find. Gosh, if you lived closer, I would have you come right over and guide me on a piece that I desperately want to refinish. It's a mid-century cabinet with a radio and record player inside. You would love it. This is a great column, Nina. keep up the great work!
ReplyDeleteThank you guys!
ReplyDeleteOh, Theresa the radio/record player cabinet sounds awesome. I wish I'd live closer! I would definitely lend a helping hand in refinishing it...
