long island city

As mentioned in my weekly recap on Monday I spend some time in Long Island City last Sunday. First me and the girls had brunch and after we finished eating we took a walk along the water. The park is called Gantry Plaza Park and you can still see reminders of the industrial past of LIC. Those cranes have been used to unload barges, the load was transferred onto trains that served all of Long Island via the Long Island Railroad tracks. The Pepsi-Cola sign used to sit atop a Pepsi factory which has now been replaced with highrise apartment buildings. There seems to be a lot of construction going on, I guess the easy access to Manhattan makes it a good location to live but one of my friends told me she looked at the prices for an apartment in that area and they do not come cheap by any means, they were even more expensive than her place in Manhattan. From the park you have a nice view of Midtown Manhattan. LIC is also home to the MoMa PS1 museum, which hosts Warm Up parties in the Summer. It's on my list for this summer and hopefully I am able to make it. I have been to the museum but not to any of their summer parties yet. Also on my list since moving to NJ is the Noguchi museum, can not believe I haven't visited it yet! And when researching for this little blog post I came across the SculptureCenter and Socrates Sculpture Park and had to add it to my list of places to visit as well. Looks like I have to venture out to Long Island City again soon...

Have any of you ever been to any of the places mentioned?

  1. Like the crane it's pretty in all it's ugliness. Never even been to Long Island, unless you count the JFK :)

  2. I have never been to LIC, but with all that art, it looks like a must-do. I would especially like to visit the Socrates Sculpture Park. My dad was a welded steel sculptor as I was growing up, and di Suvero was a great influence on him. We just don't have places like that here in the south! ;)

    1. It seems there is a big artist community in LIC, hope they will not be driven out if prices for rent will start to rise because of gentrification of the area. It is so great that your dad was a welded steel sculptor so the Socrates Sculpture park must be right up his alley.

  3. Yikes, none ... not the park or museums outside Manhattan. Though visited all the boroughs (mostly client consultations or parties). So many places to see!

  4. Oh I so wish I knew about this place before my trip to New York last year – the view is to die for! I thought I did so much in the week that I was there but there always seems to be something that I missed! I think another trip is definitely on the cards!

  5. No, I've never been. I would love to visit the places across from the city at some point. I think I'd need a guide though.

  6. I've never been to Long Island City, but J has when he wasn't able to get a hotel in Manhattan when he was up on client visits. He has good things to say about the area, but he didn't get to do any sightseeing obviously. I can't believe rent there is as expensive as Manhattan! You'd think it would be the opposite, but maybe because there's been so much flight out of Manhattan to Brooklyn and other places the rents have equalized? I don't know. Your photos are so neat! I love the juxtaposition of the Pepsi sign against the high-rises.

    1. I bet there are still apartments for rent that are not as expensive, my friend was looking in those highrises though. But unfortunately whenever an area become more popular the prices increase...

  10. Gosh, I've never been to any these places that you mention. If I lived in the area, they would all be on my to-do list, as well. Noguchi museum? Ah, yes! When we lived in Manhattan, we rarely ventured outside of the city. Seems that was a huge mistake.
    Love all your photos, Nina!
