pimp the rider

Last week I wrote about pimping my (or your) bike and this week it is all about safety for the rider. I have to admit I don't like to wear my helmet because I look like an alien wearing it. Yes, I am vain but a crushed skull in case of an accident isn't that pretty to look at either. Enter the helmets by YAKKAY, they make cute covers for their helmets so they look more like hats. Also important is having lights in the front & back and maybe some cute reflectors, like the oh la la buttons (2) or the ones recycled from street signs (3). If you like to wear wide legged pants like me you might need some trouser straps as well, the leather ones from Brooks (1) come in different colors and the winged one is also reflective (8). Do you wear a helmet when you ride your bike or are you like me and mostly bike without a helmet?

  1. I'm a total safety freak and I always wear a helmet. That said, i haven't been on a bike in years! I need a helmet just to walk around my house. I can't tell you the number of accidents I've gotten in (or fallen down the stairs). I'm a total klutz. I love those reflective trouser straps with the wings, very Hermes/Greek myth! My dad rode his bike every day to work and had a whole get-up: trouser straps, helmet, front light, back light, reflective strips, and even waterproof covers for everything, including his pants! Biking is so much fun, I wish I had a bike again.

  2. Reflectors are important even when not riding a bike, the number eight is fun. I wear my helmet every time I bike. I've never been to any accident my self but I know many who have had smaller accidents and they've said that the helmet was a real good thing to have.

  5. I’m definitely bookmarking some of these items (especially the wheel light) for when I finally get my dream Pashley Poppy bike!

  6. Oh my gosh, that stripey helmet is awesome! I love it. If only I could afford it. I wonder if a trip to the emergency room is cheaper? Hmm. I'm on my bike rarely and then really, really slowly and never near traffic, but still...

  7. I am so ashamed to admit that I don't wear a helmet when I'm riding my bike. Geez, what kind of example am I setting for my kids?! I just feel like a big, ol' nerd wearing one. Yes, vanity over safety. I really do need to rethink this notion. (I ride a bike almost every day so I'm loving these bike roundups. :)

  11. Erin, I'm super clumsy too. I should wear a helmet 24/7. I'm the girl who falls up the stairs constantly ;)

onshore, I know I really should make it a habit to wear my helmet! I should know as I already had a run in with a car back in Germany.

rooth, ha, ha you're so right! And after Halloween you can use it on the bike...

homestilo, I really need to try on these helmets and hope they have one that fits my egg head ;)

Meghan, I had to google Pashley Poppy bike and now I want the red Britannia!

Lauren, yes, those helmets are pricey but sooo cute. I put it or another cute one on my wishlist for my birthday...

Theresa, I feel nerdy too. I guess once you make it a habit it doesn't feel that way anymore but I'm not there yet ;)

    MESy, thanks for stopping by!

MrsK, there is a store in Manhattan that carries some of the models. Maybe we can check it out when I'm back from my vacation?
