architecture and signs of south beach

We didn't just stay in Fort Myers Beach but also drove to Miami for a day. Spent the day in the South Beach area, mostly walking around and absorb the art deco architecture. Of course I was trying out my new camera but I still have to figure out so many functions, so most pictures I took in the automatic setting. When I was in South Beach for the first time in 1997 some of the hotels that look pretty fancy now were still abandoned or run down which I thought was quite charming in its own way.

  1. Those vintage signs are fabulous. I love snapping them on-the-go, too. Like you said on my blog, just with other locations: I'd so love to go to Miami, if it weren't that far away...

  2. I will forever associate South Beach with the movie "The Birdcage" from the mid-90s. Tell me you've seen it? It's a gem. I love all of those vintage signs, it's like the whole place is stuck in a different era. Nostalgic things like that make me happy. I think we have the same camera, too (Canon T2i?). I'd be happy to help you out if you want to learn to shoot in manual! It would be nice to put my Photojournalism degree to some good use! Haha

  3. Igor, yes, those signs are amazing. I didn't even get to photograph them all...

Erin, love The Birdcage movie. I don't even mind that Robin Williams (he creeps me out) is in it and absolutely love Nathan Lane. P and I were talking about the movie and even tried to locate the hotel they used for the exterior shots but couldn't remember how it looked like. Just googled and it's The Carlyle. Even included it in my sign collage. I might take you up on the offer to help me figure out the camera, I got the Canon T3i, reading a book about it right now, will see how that works out...

  7. South Beach is art deco heaven, isn't it? I loved that you took photos of all the vintage signage and did a nice round up for us. I've been to South Beach/Miami one time before and I remember the vibe was very warm and friendly. Good food, too.
